Group looks to extend its red kiwifruit offer by sourcing from Europe<\/h2>\n

O<\/b>ppy has revealed that it is looking to build the red kiwifruit market with a category complement through a fresh crop from Italy and Greece.<\/p>\n

The leading grower, marketer and distributor of fresh produce said that it first brought red kiwifruit to North America nearly a decade ago.<\/p>\n

In 2020, Oppy supplied over 30 per cent of all kiwifruit available in the North American market, according to US Census Bureau Trade Data and Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n

The group said that it was employing new ways to optimise the expanding shelf spaced dedicated to the nutrient-dense fruit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a really exciting extension to the kiwifruit category,\u201d said Oppy\u2019s vice-president of categories for tropicals Steve Woodyear-Smith. \u201cBy bringing something different to retail that delivers health, flavour and colour choices, it attracts those produce-conscious consumers looking to try a new item and expand their horizons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oppy said that its internal testing of the red kiwifruit revealed very high brix levels and sweetness characterised by notes of strawberry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hearing lots of excitement from our retail partners,” Woodyear-Smith continued. “Customers are already very excited about the fruit, noting its appealing exterior, beautifully colourful interior and delicious berry-like taste.”<\/p>\n

Oppy is planning on expanding its trials of red kiwifruit varieties going into the future, currently offering fruit in 1lb clamshells.<\/p>\n
