{"id":1300,"date":"2023-03-06T12:24:34","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T09:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greekfruits.eu\/?p=1300"},"modified":"2023-03-06T12:24:34","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T09:24:34","slug":"fruitnet-zeus-faces-up-to-higher-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greekfruits.eu\/en\/fruitnet-zeus-faces-up-to-higher-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Fruitnet: Zeus faces up to higher costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"standfirst\">\n<p>Greece\u2019s Zeus Kiwi says the past grape season would have been a great one in any average year, as its growers seek to adapt to a future of higher costs<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"storytext\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a \u201cnormal\u201d year, the past grape season in Greece would have been a great success, according to Zeus Kiwi, but normal years are starting to appear a thing of the past, and most agree that higher costs look set to stay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market in Europe was quite good,\u201d says managing director Zisis Manossis. \u201cWe had a good grape season commercially and the selling price was not bad, but not enough to cover all the extra costs of the last 18 months. We are seeing higher costs for fertiliser and labour, and there is also a shortage of workers. On the packing side, costs have increased by around 20 per cent overall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowers\u2019 returns have been lower than previous years,\u201d adds sales manager Antonis Ioannidis, \u201cso the growers are suffering and exporters are also facing difficulties. It\u2019s a tough situation, that\u2019s for sure. A couple of years ago, when Covid hit, the impact on logistics was a big concern. Nowadays there is availability of containers and the situation is more stable. It takes years to build relationships with customers outside Europe. That\u2019s what we\u2019ve been trying to do in recent years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur growers are also conscious of the need to adapt,\u201d says Ioannidis, \u201clooking at new varieties, fruit that is more productive. I don\u2019t see the cost situation improving in the short term. I think the higher costs will stick with us. Any increase at retail level will not be enough to cover additional costs, and the average consumer has lost a lot of buying power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not an easy situation, but what can you do?\u201d asks Manossis. \u201cIt is not easy to persuade the retailers to increase their prices. If they can avoid it, they will.
