{"id":1549,"date":"2024-08-29T09:40:12","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T06:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greekfruits.eu\/?p=1549"},"modified":"2024-08-29T09:40:12","modified_gmt":"2024-08-29T06:40:12","slug":"fruitnet-greek-grapes-set-for-early-start-to-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greekfruits.eu\/en\/fruitnet-greek-grapes-set-for-early-start-to-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Fruitnet: Greek grapes set for early start to campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"standfirst\">\n<h3>Competition on the European grape market continues to ramp up, as an early start to the Greek season adds to the large volumes coming out of Spain, Italy and Egypt<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"storytext\">\n<p>Greece\u2019s Youphoria Fruits is preparing for a smaller grape crop this year, according to general manager George Kallitsis, in part due to the premature start to the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe harvest began much earlier than usual,\u201d he told\u00a0<em>Fruitnet<\/em>, \u201cwith varieties like Sugar Crisp being picked as early as 5 August, instead of the typical late August start.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image inline_image_right image_size_med fullsize\" data-attachment=\"131446\" data-sequence=\"1\"><button class=\"show-fullscreen\" data-url=\"\/attachment?attype=P&amp;atcode=131446&amp;storycode=262050\">Show Fullscreen<\/button><\/p>\n<p class=\"picture\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/d3fwccq2bzlel7.cloudfront.net\/Pictures\/480xAny\/4\/4\/6\/131446_youphoria_402536.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3fwccq2bzlel7.cloudfront.net\/Pictures\/480xAny\/4\/4\/6\/131446_youphoria_402536.jpg 480w\" alt=\"Youphoria\" width=\"1356\" height=\"1130\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_meta\">\n<p class=\"inline_title\">Sugar Crisp grapes from Youphoria<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This trend has continued, he said, including for varieties such as Sweet Globe, Sweet Celebration and Jack\u2019s Salute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, the markets are saturated with grapes from Spain, Italy and even Egypt,\u201d he explained. \u201cAs a result, we\u2019ve decided to concentrate on regions where the crop is just starting. We anticipate beginning packing at the end of next week, with distribution starting mid-September and continuing until the end of October.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s key varieties are Sugar Crisp, Sweet Globe, Crimson Seedless and Jack\u2019s Salute, with discussions ongoing with customers in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimultaneously, we are monitoring the upcoming kiwifruit crop, which is expected to be similar in volume to last year,\u201d revealed Kallitsis. \u201cThe fruit size should be a bit smaller, which is favourable, as last year\u2019s larger sizes presented challenges, especially for retailers who prefer medium- to small-sized fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Kallitsis, the weather remains warmer than usual, but the company is hopeful of cooler conditions as September progresses, in order to ensure a smoother harvesting period.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Youphoria plans to export kiwifruit to Thailand and South Korea through its existing partners, with the possibility of extending to India.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the ongoing Red Sea attacks are impacting trade routes to these destinations,\u201d said Kallitsis. \u201cUnfortunately, Asia no longer holds the same potential for the kiwifruit business as it once did.
