According to Mr. Labros Delas, president of the local cooperative Asepop Tirnavos, “Our cooperative places greater emphasis on nectarines. Normally, we should have started harvesting the first fruits today, but the rather cold weather during this year’s growing season, especially in May, is pushing the start of harvesting ten days later. In general, we are seeing excellent quality in the trees. Some rainfall is expected in the coming days. In theory, this could cause some cracking in the earliest varieties if they are not protected, but overall, we are not worried about major problems. As for pears, the other product that characterizes our production, it is still too early to say anything, as the fruit drop process has not yet been completed,” comments Mr. Delas.

“It would be highly desirable if, within the ten days by which harvesting will be delayed, an end were put to the war in the Middle East. From our experience, the commercial situation reminds us of the period when the war in Ukraine began, while we also have no clear picture yet of how inbound summer tourism will move this year, which is also an important channel for absorbing our fruit.”

“One thing we do not like is the low prices being received for apricots and cherries.
