Greek kiwifruit has gained access to the Vietnamese market after almost a decade of negotiation, according to an announcement from the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food.

Negotiations between the phytosanitary services of the two countries began in 2016. They concluded with the final response from the Phytosanitary Service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Vietnam (PPD) on 13 February 2026.

The PPD confirmed that all the phytosanitary measures proposed following an on-site inspection in November were accepted and the opening of the Vietnamese market for Greek kiwifruit was approved.

Access to Vietnam was approved for all cultivated varieties of kiwifruit in Greece, both green-fleshed and yellow-fleshed. Consignments to be exported must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate and subject to the approved cold treatment process either before the consignment is loaded (pre-shipment) or during transit (in-transit). Exports and the issuance of an official phytosanitary certificate will be permitted from 1 March 2026.

Konstantinos Tsiaras, Greek minister of rural development and food, said the milestone represented the government’s commitment to opening new markets for Greek products.

“The opening of the Vietnamese market for Greek kiwi is the result of a systematic and multi-year effort by the phytosanitary services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, in close cooperation with the country’s production and export bodies. It constitutes another essential step in the extroversion of Greek agricultural production and in strengthening the presence of our quality products in international markets,” said Tsiaras.

”Our goal is to continuously expand markets for Greek agricultural products, on terms that enhance the producer’s income, increase added value and safeguard the international competitiveness of our country.

”We continue with a plan, consistency and determination, opening new paths for the primary sector and strengthening the Greek agricultural economy.”
