However, there have been no weather-related problems this year, which means a major increase compared to last year’s heavily affected production. “This year, we expect production to be at least 30-40% higher than last year, while fruit sizes will not be small either. In general, we are seeing excellent quality in the trees. Some rainfall is expected in the coming days. In theory, this could cause some cracking in the earliest varieties if they are not protected, but overall, we are not worried about major problems. As for pears, the other product that characterizes our production, it is still too early to say anything, as the fruit drop process has not yet been completed,” comments Mr. Delas.

“It would be highly desirable if, within the ten days by which harvesting will be delayed, an end were put to the war in the Middle East. Although we target the Balkan and Central European markets, and not areas that are becoming inaccessible, consumer sentiment is directly affected. From our experience, the commercial situation reminds us of the period when the war in Ukraine began, while we also have no clear picture yet of how inbound summer tourism will move this year, which is also an important channel for absorbing our fruit.”

“One thing we do not like is the low prices being received for apricots and cherries. Peaches and nectarines have different dynamics, of course, while the weather may also become warmer by the time harvesting begins, increasing demand for all stone fruit, so there is no need to draw conclusions now,” concludes the president of the Greek cooperative.
